What Makes Portable Am Fm Radios Portable?
The definition of what are Portable Am Fm Radios has taken a number of interesting twists and turns since the control of radio waves began. At one time a large rather heavy box was considered portable. In today's world, however, portable means the ability to carry the unit on your wrist or in your pocket with several other applications.
What is portable?
There have been two real heydays for Portable Am Fm Radios; once during the 1940's and then again in the late 1960's and 1970's. In each of these two periods the portability of the radio had differing connotations but neither was any less valid than the other considering what is viewed as portable in today's world.
The use of radios in the 1940's involved a radio sitting in the living room with chairs oriented around it much in the same way that a television is oriented toward today's family. It was the defacto meeting place for many people with neighbors' visiting to catch up on the latest neighborhood news or to hear what was happening in the world that week. Whether one might call these types of radios portable or not is for discussion, although when compared to earlier models it was fairly portable and just needed an outlet. In the 1960's and 1970's portable Am Fm radios really did hit their stride through the use of batteries. These Portable AM FM Radios could be found at the beach or just swinging down the street. This was the "hip" way to be seen. Carrying portable Am Fm Radios and dancing down the street to a "grooving "tune. Odd by many standards until you see what people do while listening to their iPods today. Be careful what you wish for In many respects, the use of Portable Am Fm Radios could be called the beginning of the information age. In today's world we have easy access to the news of the world at lightning fast speeds; the internet, far too many cable news channels and radio to top it all off. The Portable Am Fm Radios of the 60's and 70's offered many of the same functions that are seen today, albeit at somewhat slower speeds. There was a weather report or channel if you were in the farm belt, a financial report if you were in a major trading center and an entertainment/music channel to choose from any time you turned on the radio. Granted, the Portable Am Fm Radios of yesteryear weren't as slick and polished as the channels we endure today, but is that such a bad thing. The radios that have followed us through the 20th century are a microcosm of the world on which we live. They give us a view into how we behave when we are not paying attention. Whether the radio is portable or not may be a question but regardless of the answer the radio has been coming along with us for the ride whether we like it or not.
